Bess Beetle

Odontotaenius disjunctus

Description:

They are beetles that have 4 stages in their life, starting with formation inside an egg, then born a white larva that are in the same place as adults. The larvae feed in the pre-chewed food prepared by adults. Larvae transform to pupate, where the shell is created and finally, they transformed as adults. They can be caught easily as they do not have claws to bite hard. They make it soft and delicate sounds when rubbed together. They are so harmless that a small child can touch them without problems.

Habitat:

Uses his great jaws to get into logs and create galleries where they live and develop. They prefer heavy woods such as oak or elm and environments with high humidity. For beetles can digest cellulose from wood, the wood must have a natural microflora, such as fungi and bacteria, which degraded timber and helps in predigestion beetles.

Notes:

Aproximadamente a 1650 msnm. Found in one of the trails of Uyuca's Reserve. Approximately 1650 mosl. It is considered that is an adult exemplary.

While this individual is clearly similar to the Odontotaenius disjunctus described in http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/misc..., nontheless the location in Honduras seems to be far from the range of that species. Also the shape/form of the antennae seem different. Can anybody suggest a different identification for this photograph?

You have a wonderful "Bess Beetle".... in the Passalidae family. They are easily handled, will not bite, and they make cute little kissing sounds if they are frightened. Even a small child can hold them and touch them. Definitely my favorite beetle!
