Baobab

Adansonia sp.

Description:

Deciduous tree that remains leafless for a majority of the year to minimize water loss. Baobabs have massive trunks used to store water during a long dry season in an arid habitat. A single tree can hold 20,000-30,000+ gallons of water. They can live to be over a thousand years old.

Habitat:

Arid regions near the equator. Madagascar, eastern and southern African mainland, Arabian Peninsula and one species native to Australia.
