Congratulations again Lars, we've chosen this sun bear to illustrate #WorldAnimalDay:
"Today is #WorldAnimalDay! The mission of World Animal Day is to raise awareness on the status of animals in order to improve their welfare standards. This global event is supported by UK-based animal welfare charity Naturewatch Foundation. We have chosen to mark this day with this sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) as our Spotting of the Day. Sun bears inhabit tropical forests of southeast Asia, and are classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss through large-scale deforestation and illegal hunting. Sun bears are also exploited in appalling conditions in bear farms for the bear bile trade. This sun bear was photographed at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre in Sepilok, a wildlife conservation and research centre aiming at improving animal welfare and rehabilitation for sun bears.
