Red-headed woodpecker

Melanerpes erythrocephalus

Description:

Adults are crimson red on the neck and head. The back and tail are black while the belly and rump are white. Sexes are alike. Juveniles have similar markings, but their heads are grey.

Habitat:

Spotted on a dead tree with a nesting cavity. Located in the Ouachita National Forest. A mixed forest of pines and hardwoods.
