Great Egret

Ardea alba

Description:

Baby or very young Great Egrets at various stages in development

Habitat:

Roosting in a tree in the middle of a small, mud-bottom lake

Notes:

Love to visit this location and watch the Great Egrets. The males put on quite a show for the females during their breeding season which involves him displaying his tail feathers up and out (like a peacock, almost) while perched on a branch and bobbing up and down with his knees in very slow motion. At times he arches his neck straight up, throwing his head back and at other times he lowers his neck and points or jabs downward with his bill toward the ground. This display is repeated over and over again like a well choreographed dance. These young are the results of a successful breeding season.
