Ruffed Grouse

Bonasa umbellus

Adult grouse 17" in length usually solitary. This was a rufous morph with strong rust colour.

Pacific temperate rain forest area but this acreage has been replanted as a conifer research forest.

We flushed this grouse while hiking along the Blue Trail in the Malcolm Knapp Research forest. It pecked my boot lace and then pecked my mitten when I put my hand down. It followed us for about a 100 ft along the trail. My sister took this picture.

You should remember where that friendly ruffed grouse was and go back during breeding season to see if there is evidence of breeding. So cool to see the young!
