Fenugreek Milkcap

Lactarius helvus

Description:

Lovely lavender-pink mushroom with a soft, dry, depressed cap and a smell that reminded me of caramel. The gills were pink and started to leak a clear milk when marked. The liquid kept coming out and the gills started to get mushy after about 30 sec. The milk was not copious and didn't stain the gills.

Habitat:

Growing on the ground in a mixed forest. It looked like there was some buried, rotten wood underneath the dirt where the mushroom was growing.

Notes:

Mildly toxic when raw. Symptoms, including vomiting and vertigo, occur within thirty minutes of consumption.
