A Winged Carpenter Ant

Description:

Order: Hymenoptera Family: Formicidae Genus: Camponotus Carpenter ants are large. ( 0.3 to 1.0 inches ) Carpenter ants, are indigenous to many forested parts of the world. They build nests inside wood, consisting of galleries chewed out with there mandibles, preferably in dead, damp wood. They do not consume the wood. Carpenter ants, are foragers, that typically eat parts of other dead insects, or substances derived from other insects. Common foods for them, include insect parts, "honey dew" produced by aphids, or some secretions from plants. Most species of carpenter ants, forage at night. Carpenter ants, do not eat wood, because they are unable to digest cellulose. They only create tunnels and nests within it. Carpenter ants, work to build nests, that house eggs in environments with high humidity, due to there sensitivity to environmental humidity. Carpenter ants, are omnivorous. Carpenter ants, are eusocial insects, with a complex life cycle. This ant had two pairs of transparent wings. It had two antennae. It had six legs. It had a head, thorax, and an abdomen. It had a black gaster. This ant was alive, and able to move.

Habitat:

Carpenter ant species, reside both outdoors and indoors, in moist, decaying, or hollow wood, most commonly in forest environments.

Notes:

I went outside at 7:00 a.m. in the morning. I saw a winged, carpenter ant, resting on a concrete wall, on the outside of my house. This ant, had two pairs of transparent wings. It had two antennae. It had six legs. It had a head, thorax, and an abdomen. It had a black gaster. This ant was alive, and able to move.
