Great Plains Toad

Bufo cognatus. (Anaxyrus cognatus)

Description:

Robust toad with bold back pattern, usually green on white or cream. Up to 4 1/2". They have spades on their hind feet to help them dig. Nocturnal.

Habitat:

Prairie grassland. Also agricultural land. From Mexico to Canada through the Great Plains states. Also found throughout Arizona.

Notes:

The pictured specimens were collected along rural roadways northeast of Clovis, NM.
