Rana catesbeiana
The Bullfrog is, by far, the largest frog in New Jersey. The ground color is green, dappled with gray or brown. The underside is usually whitish; the male may have a yellow throat. The male’s tympanum (eardrum) is larger than the eye; the female’s is the same size as the eye or smaller. It has no dorsolateral ridges; instead, a ridge runs from the eye past the eardrum then drops down to the shoulder.
Where to find them: May inhabit any permanent body of freshwater. It is usually found in the vegetation at the water’s edge. When to find them: Breeds late April through July. Voice: Bellowing jug-o-rum.
Spotted at a farm by the edge of a pond.
