Western White Clematis

Clematis ligusticifolia

Description:

A climbing vine (3-6 m) of the Ranunculaceae (buttercup) family, native to the United States and Canada. It blooms in mid to late summer. Flowers are about 2.5 cm in diameter and white, leading to one common name, 'virgin's bower'. Seed heads look somewhat like tiny whorled beards, thus another common name, 'old man's beard'. The seed heads greatly resemble those of horticultural varieties.

Habitat:

Grows in areas along roads and streamsides with trees or shrubs useful as climbing supports.

Notes:

Big Thompson Canyon, about 10 km below Estes Park, beside the highway, climbing a Ponderosa Pine.
