Red-tailed Hawk

Buteo jamaicensis

Description:

This hawk is melanistic and doesn't have the typical red tail. The third image shows the second eyelid called the nictitating membrane.

Habitat:

This hawk can be found throughout most of North and Central America.

Notes:

This owl is under the care of Project Wildlife http://projectwildlife.org/ and was part of an educational program called Hawkwatch in the Ramona Grasslands by the Wildlife Research Institute http://www.wildlife-research.org/.

Thanks Emily! I shot this with my Canon 60D using an EFS 18-135mm. It turned out pretty good since the subject was close. My recent coyote spotting was with the same lens and it was about 300 ft away from me. I occasionally rent a telephoto for birds but it gets spendy to do it often :)
