armyworm (Noctuid moth)

Mythimna sp

Description:

This pale brownish-cream moth was about 20mm long. A pair of dark streaks ran down each forewing with a single star-shaped patch in the middle of the streak. Thorax had dense pale brown setae.

Habitat:

larvae are said to feed on Poaceae (grasses/grain). Spotted under bright lights in a car yard.

Notes:

There are several species of Mythimna. The web link refers to M. convecta and its distribution in Australia but it looks a little different to my spotting. Here is a spotting similar to my moth, but not in Australia http://lepidoptera.pro/taxonomy/7611
