Green Anole

Anolis carolinensis

Description:

May be either green or brown depending on environmental conditions. When brown, may have faint markings on the back. Males have a pinkish throat fan that is displayed in territorial rivalries or when approaching a potential mate.

Habitat:

The green anole is a common lizard throughout Georgia and South Carolina, but is absent from some areas in the mountains. Anoles are generally arboreal (living in trees) but can be found almost anywhere. Anoles are commonly found in suburban or even urban areas and can often be seen perched on fences and rooftops.

Notes:

This guy certainly wasn't camera shy! I couldn't believe how close he let me get.

Your right, I didn't even look to see where in the state this was spotted at. I just went by the dorsal pattern that I have seen more commonly in Browns.

Brown Anole hasn't reached that far north yet. In Georgia, their range is restricted to the Florida border. Carolina Anoles are sometimes nicknamed the "American Chameleon" based on their adept ability to change color to match their surroundings.
