Long-eared Owl

Asio otus

Description:

The Long-eared Owl - Asio otus is a species of owl which breeds in Europe, Asia, and North America. This species is a part of the larger grouping of owls known as typical owls, family Strigidae, which contains most species of owl.

Notes:

I remember getting the phone call from work that the Long-eared Owl had been spotted by a friend of mine at the woods. I finished my work and took a half day of vacation because I knew it would be a one day wonder. Sure enough, that evening was the last time the owl was seen. First County Record for Long-eared Owl! 11/11/11

He was probably just annoyed by the camera while he was trying to sleep :-) We avoided flashes during documentation to hopefully refrain from being too much of an issue. . . and after shooting with a flash at wild monkeys, Never again . . . I felt horrible from their reaction!

Thanks Alice. It was an honor to get to share in the moment with my friends at the Audubon Society.
