Thick-billed Raven

Corvus crassirostris

Description:

Large and massive black corvid, roughly the same size as Common Raven or even larger, of some 60 to 70 cm in length, with a white round patch on nape. It sports an enormous and massive arched black bill with a tiny white tip.

Habitat:

Endemic to Abyssinian highlands, it lives in mountainous areas and forests; reportedly often seen near human habitations - but during my three-year stay in Ethiopia, and consecutive visits, this was my unique (photographed) encounter with the species. Seen in wooded area near Awasa town, close to Awasa lake.

Notes:

As said above, this species is slightly larger than a Common Raven - as such, it earns the title of the biggest world passerine bird... (I havo no idea where did I pick up this info...)
