Male yellow-bellied sapsucker

Description:

This is the male yellow-bellied sapsucker. He is a medium-sized woodpecker. Has a red forehead, crown and chin with a tan-to-yellow breast and belly. He has an unusual checkered back. Drills holes in trees to get the tree sap.

Habitat:

This male yellow-bellied sapsucker was spotted in the cyprus swamp along with a female at the Palmetto Island State Park, Abbeville, Louisiana
