Australian Paper Wasp

Ropalidia revolutionalis

Description:

This strange wasp's nest is made up of 6-10" long icicle shaped tubes hanging from the ceiling near the entrance of a small cave.

Habitat:

Cave in a remnant rainforest.

Notes:

In the background, you can see some ancient Wandjina art painted by a group of native aboriginals some 10,000 years ago. The location is not accurate as uncharted rock art sites such as this one cannot be mapped without special permission.

That looks bizarre and beautiful. Nothing like the few wasp nests that I have ever seen.

Wow! Fantastic spotting. I'm glad the rock art is kept off the map for safety.
