Red-bellied Woodpecker

Melanerpes carolinus

Description:

This red-bellied woodpecker is a female as seen by the red portion of the head not reaching all the way to her beak. She pecked at the trunks of several trees in my Boca Raton, FL backyard enjoying the insects she found there.

Habitat:

In my backyard along an inland fresh water canal in western Boca Raton, FL.

Notes:

She has some reddish coloration on her belly which isn't exactly red but is how she gets her name. A few days ago this woodpecker sat on the edge of a dog's water bowl in my backyard and had a drink.
