This deciduous vine was growing 15 feet up a tree near a beaver pond. It is either Carolina Moonseed or one of the Smilax sp. The fruit is in clumps.
It is usually found at the margins of openings in forests, often near streams. This one was photographed in late winter near a beaver pond at the Aiken Gopher Tortoise Heritage Preserve near Windsor (Aiken County), SC.
