Spotting

Description:

This deciduous vine was growing 15 feet up a tree near a beaver pond. It is either Carolina Moonseed or one of the Smilax sp. The fruit is in clumps.

Habitat:

It is usually found at the margins of openings in forests, often near streams. This one was photographed in late winter near a beaver pond at the Aiken Gopher Tortoise Heritage Preserve near Windsor (Aiken County), SC.
