Velvet Ant ♂

Dasymutilla vesta

Description:

Fuzzy black and reddish-orange wasp.

Habitat:

Sandy suburban yard next to mixed forest

Notes:

There is a chance it could be Sphaeropthalma pensylvanica, but the folks on bugguide were leaning towards D. vesta. I was told this by someone on bugguide: Head is rounded = Dasymutilla vesta; Head is squared = Sphaeropthalma pensylvanica
