@chesterbperry: You're right about the gentian, of course. I see a lot more mints in my area (almost no gentian at all, really), so they didn't occur to me. Good call!
If you have the chance, upload a picture after the flowers have opened. In the meantime, it looks like something in the mint family, Lamiaceae. If you can get to the plant again, check the stem. If it feels square (flat-sided) instead of round, it's in that family for sure.
