Check out Bull Thistle. (Cirsium vulagare). I found a really helpful pdf online about the most common native and alien thistles in Oklahoma. Check it out and see if the description fits.

I believe this is some sort of thistle. It's so lovely! I'm not familiar with western plants very much, but I'll see what I can come up with. :)
