Mopsus Mormon Jumping Spider

Mopsus mormon

Description:

This tropical jumping spider occurs in New Guinea and Northern Australia in heavily vegetated areas. This one is female because of her lighter colored "mask".

Habitat:

Remnant rainforest canyon.

Notes:

I found this while trekking through a remnant rainforest in the canyon at the bottom of Morgan Falls in the Drysdale National Park. *note to admins: the first image also appears on the wikipedia page, but it is my original work and I submitted to that site.

Probably better off without a macro, the loss of DOF would upset you. Wonderful images, as are the rest of your shots.

Thanks Dave, I have to admit that I really just got lucky with the lighting here, not only are these images not stacked but they were shot without a macro lens or flash!

Thanks all! I've added an additional image as well as a video clip of this individual jumping onto my camera lens as I tried to focus.

@JackWanamaker, I actually looked up some images of the male and saw how dark the mask was. I assumed it meant brighter because so many species the coloration of the male is brighter than the female. Just goes to show, can't second guess mother nature.

@DonnaBollenbach, in reference to the mask, I meant "light" as in more of a shade of white than the male, which has a black face mask. The females of this species are more bright and ornate than the males.

Thanks all! @Hemma, believe it or not, this was snapped with a $50 olympus point-and-shoot using it's digital macro setting, natural light.

Very cool spider, has the look of a green lynx spider with the body of a jumping spider. Love the mask..if that is "light" the male's mask must be very bright.
