Knight anole

Anolis equestris

Description:

Dark lizard with yellow streaks, flat triangle-shaped head when viewed from above. About 12-14 inches long. Found in the lawn. The dark color indicates that this individual was frightened or stressed. It is usually green. It had a large dewlap so it was probably a male which it showed when picked up.

Habitat:

Front lawn, suburban neighborhood in Boca Raton, FL

Notes:

It did not run away when approached though opened its mouth and showed its dewlap when picked up, which is easy to do. I never saw a lizard like this in this area where we mostly have green iguanas and small anole and curly tail lizards. the Knight anole is a non-native species to Florida and is native to Cuba but is now established here.

I believe it is truly a Knight anole lizard. The reason the color is so dark instead of the normal green is that it must have been under stress or frightened. Thanks JoshuaGSmith, ForestDragon and AshleyT for weighing in!

Basilisks have crests, and the yellow stripes are in different places. This is a knight anole.

This looks like a Knight Anole. They are a large species of non-native anole that is found in Florida. They are native to Cuba.

This lizard has no visible crest. So I wonder if it could be a basilisk.
