Falkland Pipit

Anthus correndera grayi

Description:

Actually a subspecies of the South American Correndera pipit, it is widespread on the Falklands, but very shy. It has a very sweet song, which is how I located it (their plumage makes them very camouflaged against the grassland!). They are common in open grassland, but hard to get close to. Like many pipits, it has an undulating flight.

Habitat:

Found widely in grassland, and open coastal areas. Does not like grass that is too long or dense, and avoids areas of tussock grass.

Notes:

I found this little one near the beach in Whalebone Cove. It was hard to locate, and flew off rather quickly! They are definitely shy birds, and I never got as close to another one as I did here.
