Fulvous Whistling-Duck

Dendrocygna bicolor

Description:

Well I'm not really a duck person, but going by body shape I always think that whistling ducks have very long legs and long necks. Between black-bellied whistling ducks and fulvous, these guys have more cinnamon coloring and don't have black bellies. They have light wing tips when their wings are tucked, and these tips kind of "feather" up so you notice them.

Habitat:

Matagorda Island is really NOT their typical habitat. This group was probably migrating and must have landed for a rest. They typically like freshwater marshes, especially if its been turned into rice fields. Here, they're on the beach, the Gulf side of the Island...lol.

Notes:

These pics are from Matagorda Island, which is managed by the Aransas NWR.
