Giant Banded Millipede

Description:

Striped and big worm-like body.

Habitat:

We were in Hampi, Karnataka, India exploring the ruins of temples. Suddenly it began to rain and we ran over gigantic bare rocks to shelter in a temple when I spotted a drowned dead giant millipede in a small pool of rainwater that had collected in a crater on the rock. I was sad that it had drowned but was intrigued when in areas outside other temple -ruins we saw lots of millipede-bodies littered around as if something had sucked them dry...but NOT one live one. We even had a discussion on what could be sucking them dry and leaving only the exoskeleton...I mean had it been a bird or a lizard it would have eaten the prey whole! Finally near the massive monolith of the sacred bull Nandi, as we were leaving, I spotted about three living ones UNDER the ledge...no " normal" tourist would have even looked. I realized I had been scanning unconsciously anyway...I was so glad to have found live ones. The finger in the first photo belongs to my sister who though it was necessary to establish perspective!
