American Pelecinid

Pelecinus polyturator

Description:

Thin, shiny black color w/ long abdomen (scorpion like in shape). Short clear wings and long antennae. 6 legs.

Habitat:

Crop fields, woods, and suburban gardens throughout North, Central, and South America.

Notes:

What appears to be a stinger is actually just the females long abdomen which she uses to bury her larvae into root dwelling June bug larvae. They are parasitoids which feed on the June bug larvae underground until maturity.
