Overall healthy looking tree. Leaves are green in the spring then turn purple/burgundy into the summer. Average size is 6-8m tall and 4-7m wide. Great ornamental tree with small white flowers in the spring. Produce small tiny black/purple berries. Slowly losing leaves due to fall season. Spotted one clump of black knot on a branch.
Located in the shrub bed of the Central Botanical Garden. This is on the south side of the Land Sciences Building, right beside the water garden. Has good exposure to morning sun and some afternoon sun.
Black knot fungus was spotted on one branch. The infected branch should be pruned and properly disposed of as to not spread to other susceptible trees or shrubs. Monitoring is key to manage fungus. Pruning is most effective in late winter when fungus is dormant. Could also spray in early spring when tree is still dormant with a lime-sulphur solution. If left untouched, fungus will spread and could girdle and kill the branches which would ultimately kill the tree.
