Hi Lorraine! This is not a gecko or lizard (reptile), but an alpine salamander, a shiny black salamander found in the central European alpine regions. It should be put in the Amphibians category.

We have Gecko's of a similar size in Australia, but I have never seen a black Gecko or lizzard. I'm wondering if there might be a reason that Gecko's are different colours when they live in different climates. Australia is very hot in comparison to where I saw this little guy.
