Pine spider weevil

Rhyephenes sp.

Description:

large weevil, 2cm, black with purple iridescence

Habitat:

temperate forest

Notes:

I spotted these 2 large weevils mating on a tree in Nahuelbuta national park. There wasn't a lot of insects around the park so I was surprised to see these two on the trunk of a tree as I hiked the park.

please don't trust species level IDs for these on web - my impression: partially false.
