Trillium lancifolium
It is a small trillium with a sessile maroon blossom. T. lancifolium leaves narrow significantly at their base, but they are sessile. The three maroon (rarely yellow) petals are up to 1.5 inches long, and are typically twisted. The stamens curve inward. The leaves of Trillium lancifolium are around 4 times as long as they are wide.
This one was photographed in a basic-mesic forest on a north-facing slope at the Stevens Creek Heritage Preserve near Clarks Hill, SC. It is found only in six southeastern state – TN, MS, AL, GA, SC, and FL, and is endangered in Florida and Tennessee.
It is also known as Lanceleaf Wakerobin. The pink flowers behind the trillium are Spring Beauty.
