Description:

The American Oystercatcher, occasionally called the American Pied Oystercatcher, is a member of family Haematopodidae. The bird is marked by its black and white body and a long, thick orange beak. This shorebird is approximately 19 inches in length.

Hi Ava, thanks. This bird is banded with two bands. One is a color number band and the other is a galvanized smaller band at the base of its leg. My friend Sue Heath from the Coastal Bird Observatory is monitoring nesting populations of American Oystercatchers, and should have a story on this guy or gal for me shortly!
