Yes definitely forsythia and yes they are definitely in the USA and southeastern states. I have one in my yard as a matter of fact. :)
They may not be native, but they are more than happy to volunteer themselves all over! (Good thing they are pretty!)
It looks like a Forsythia shrub, but I'm not sure that they can be found in USA..
