Accipiter striatus
A small raptor spotted in the central wetland area at Huntley Meadows Park. This individual is immature, as indicated by its yellow eyes. I spotted the hawk when it attacked a smaller bird unsuccessfully. At first, I mistakenly thought two birds were mating. Preying, mating -- hey, what's the difference? ;-) Sharp-shinned Hawks and Cooper's Hawks are very similar in appearance. Good to be back, Christy! I have been hibernating for the winter. But seriously, I'm eagerly looking forward to warmer weather and the return of dragonflies and damselflies.
Sincere thanks to the following PN spotters for help in IDing this bird: "AshleyBradford" (who commented offline); "weeander"; "Liam"; and "BobSpader" (who also commented offline).
Nice capture, Walter!! Good to see you back! (or have I just been missing your posts??)
