Fingerprint Shrimp

Coralliocaris sandyi

Description:

This Shrimp is relatively new to science, described by Mitsuhashi & Takeda in the year 2008. Another rare find, this tiny Shrimp, less than 1 cm in size from the genus Coralliocaris. Their common Name relates to the tiny lines on their body, making it looks like the prints on our fingers. Although tiny, she is carrying a batch of eggs and they are quite well developed, you can already see the tiny black eyes. From time to time, she will use her legs along her body to move the eggs/embryos around to aerate them. Shrimps not carrying Eggs tends to 'hug' the corals they lives on, as it gives them better camouflage on the Acropora corals, which also has the line patterns in their structure.

Habitat:

Tropical reef in the shallows but only found living communally with Acropora corals.

Notes:

New Organism to Project Noah
