Harlequin Duck

Histrionicus histrionicus

Description:

When I see this duck it makes me think of Northwestern Indian Art. Slate blues and grays. Rusty on the flanks and white slashes and fake eye. This one is non-breeding or immature male which lacks some of the bolder markings.

Habitat:

This are mainly found in the northwest and in swift waters. This one was found in the San Francisco bay hanging out sometimes with Surf Scoters or Scaup. Feeding outside a marina, would come in and rest on the rock in a lagoon during high tide.

Notes:

Not common in the bay area but have been seen on occasion on the western part of the bay or entering under the head of San Francisco.
