A distinctive looking species with striking facial markings. The summer male has black "horns", which give this species its American name.
The Horned Lark is a widespread bird of open country.

Good shots!
Thanks. They are fairly common in open areas but not always easy to get close to, especially in winter. This one bird did not fly off when I drove up to it and allowed me to edge close enough for a few photographs.
