Scolypopa australis

Scolypopa australis

Description:

Adult form of Scolypopa australis - about 15mm across. Lacy net wings, broad head.

Habitat:

On any green stemmed moist plant - stems or leaves. This one on camellia leaf in suburban back yard.

Notes:

Now that we have suffered drought conditions for the last 6 months these little creatures are having a real impact on our smaller stemmed plants causing serious stunting and yellowing. On some stems they are a continuous carpet. Organic defenses include mild garlic spray. Maybe pursued by the previous spotting (sparassidae) but I haven't seen many creatures attack these. Even the wattle birds around here will take them when they are young but soon seem to ignore them. I suspect they are fairly unpalatable.

Thanks Leanne. I didn't have to search very hard though. We have such a plague at the moment we are suffocating in them. They come with drought I think.
