Spinus tristis
The body is yellow with a black crown on its head. with black wing and and white stripes. This one is a breeding male. The females are a soft buff color.
These birds enjoy eating seeds they can be found on farmland back yard and anywhere that has a good supply of food and water this one is looking at a sunflower plant that is in the back yard.
Common name is American goldfinch.
It also happens to be the state bird of new jersey, Iowa and Washington state. The finch is a granivore which means it mainly eats seeds elm seeds also sunflower seeds.
