Falkland Thrush

Turdus falcklandii falcklandii

Description:

A sub-species of the South American austral thrush, widespread passerine on the Falklands. Feeds on a variety of foods, from small insects and worms to berries and seeds. Has also learned that humans can be a good way to get food! Very similar to the European blackbird in both shape and size, but has a dark brown head and back, and an almost reddish underside. The bird in these pictures is a juvenile.

Habitat:

Very adaptable, can live anywhere from rocky shores to human settlements. I found this one on some rocky outcrops by the coast.

Notes:

This juvenile was very bold and didn't mind the group of humans nearby! Spotted at Gypsy Cove, Falkland Islands
