A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
These nests surprised me as they looked a bit like the weaver nests of India and Africa and I don't know of such a bird around here. There were two nests each about 50cms tall, hanging from thin branches about 2 metres off the ground. They seemed to be made of a combination of grasses, mosses and lichens. Each had a slightly hooded entrance on one side of the bulbous part.
Hanging from low branches in eucalyptus dominated forest national park.
Yellow-throated Scrubwren? Sericornis citreogularis. My searches so far show this bird would be well outside range. It is usually on the east coast of Australia but it's normal southern range limit is far eastern Victoria. I can't find any other bird yet that would build such a nest. It's closest relatives build balls or domes on hard surfaces but will prefer to take over the S.citreogularis nest if the can find one, renovating it internally. http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/species/... http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/species/... Local bird expertise definitely required for this mystery. http://www.birdlife.org/datazone/species...

We don't have any Hemma. There are a few species of sunbird 4000kms away in northern Australia. But this is the cold south :-(
How about sunbird?
