Darkling Beetle

Eleodes sp.

Description:

A large Darkling Beetle, about 3 cm long, with smooth, non-striated elytra (probably fused) and climbing about on a rocky cliff, midday.

Habitat:

Vertical rocky cliff (see last picture) about half way up the W Rim Trail to Angel's Landing, Zion National Park, Utah.

Notes:

Twenty more large black Tenebs were observed along the trail edges when coming back down after dark from Angel's Landing. Now I am not sure how many were of the species with striated elytra (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/995...) or of this species with smooth elytra.
