Black-headed Carpenter Ant

Camponotus atriceps

Description:

A carpenter ant, I believe. The ants in these pictures, if indeed the same species, vary enormously in size with the small ones (workers?) being no more than 5-6 mm long while the larger ones (guards?) are about 15 mm. They have a pale olive green body. The abdomen has 3 black stripes and the head is completely black. I don't know if the tiny ones are colored the same. I didn't notice at the time. I will try to do better :-)

Habitat:

These were found on the corner of a painted cement block building in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador.

Notes:

Thanks Saturniidae. There's an even better picture on Antwiki. I appreciate the help.

Hi Bobbit. Your comment reflects a great ability to use tact :-) Yes, that should be millimeters. I will make the change. Thank you very much. I would love to see a 15 cm ant, but am afraid it would need to be made of rubber :-)
