One-spotted Prepona or Banded King Shoemaker

Archaeoprepona demophon

Description:

There were 3 of these quite large butterflies flying from tree to tree across a small clearing in a wetland forest. I watched them from the boardwalk. They seemed to always land head down on the trunk of the tree, or on a large branch, with their wings closed. The upper wing had an area of Morpho blue.

Habitat:

Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, a mosaic of elongated lagoons, connected by creeks, savannas and logwood thickets. This one was in a dark clearing in the forest.
