Egretta tricolor
The Tricolored Heron formerly known in North America as the Louisiana Heron, is a small heron. It is a resident breeder from the Gulf states of the USA and northern Mexico south through Central America and the Caribbean to central Brazil and Peru.
This photograph was taken with a 2x Teleconverter on my 500mm F4 lens. There is a lot of debate as to weather or not the 2x TC destroys image quality to the point of being documenting shots only, let this stand as an example of what this combination can do for when you need 1000mm length.

Yep, the best thing we can do in the field is always zoom to max levels on our LCD and check your histogram. When in doubt ETTR (Expose to the right)
Well great photography is all about trial and error I always think!! the great advantage of digital photography is being able to play around with the image easily and push cameras and images to the max without it costing fortunes in films!
Thanks Debb, it took some pixel peeping to see just how soft this image came out, after talking with some photographers who pixelpeeped for me, this image is about as sharp as a dull knife in the end. I'm working on the image in CS5 right now to do some masking on it and pull out more details from a .TIF file. I still think that the TC give more detail than we think, you just need to use them properly. I could have easily made this image levels sharper by stopping the lens down one more full stop and shooting around f10-11 in order to give it enough details, I had the light, but in this instance I was more concerned with pushing the lens and converter as wide open as possible. Thanks!
Great shot Cody, lovely colours. I had always previously steered away from teleconverters as like you say I didnt want it destroying any image quality but used this way looks great!
Thank you Ali and Ava, this image has received a lot of critiquing to help my post production skills. Should have a second image up soon with the remastered file.
Very Nice...
