Striated Heron

Butorides striatus

Description:

A coastal dweller with beautiful blue-grey feathers. It feeds on crustateans & small fish on mangrove edges & coastal tidal flats. They are really quite lovely to look at these birds. I could have watched it fishing for hours.

Habitat:

Found on the muddy edge of saltwater river. There are 2 races. This one, Race macrorhyncha, is found on the Australian coast from the Gulf Of Carpentaria south to Victoria. The other Race stagnatilis, is found mostly on the Pilbara Coast of Western Australia & rarely anywhere else.
