Antheraea polyphemus
Behold, the giant (but not biggest) Saturniid moth, the Polyphemus moth. Silk moths, especially the giant ones, are my favorite moths. For some reason, these guys are really common in the fall. This is a female, you can tell by the less bushy antennae. Named for the cyclops son of Poseidon and Thoosa for their huge eyespots on their wings, which they use as a distraction display against predators.
Widespread throughout North America.
