Thank you Eric, that makes sense I found what looked like spider chelicerae inside one, but did not include the photo since they were difficult to see.
Well, the "pupal casings" are actually individual mud nests created by a spider wasp in the genus Auplopus (or possibly Phanagenia bombycina).
